When to choose PEEK over ABS?

In the world of 3D printing, the choice of material is crucial. Two engineering plastics often mentioned are ABS and PEEK. But in what situations should PEEK be preferred?


ABS: the versatile standard


ABS is widely used due to its good price-to-performance ratio. It offers:

  • Good mechanical resistance

  • Relative ease of printing

  • Good heat resistance (up to ~100°C)

However, it quickly shows its limitations in demanding environments.


PEEK: the high-performance material


PEEK (Polyether Ether Ketone) is a high-end polymer used in aerospace, medical and industrial applications.

Its advantages:

  • Exceptional thermal resistance (up to 250°C continuous)

  • Very high chemical resistance

  • Excellent mechanical strength

  • Biocompatibility (in some cases)


When to choose PEEK?


PEEK becomes relevant when:

  • The room is exposed to high temperatures

  • The environment is chemical or corrosive.

  • The mechanical resistance must be maximum

  • Reliability is critical (industry, medical, etc.)


Things to consider


  • Cost much higher than ABS

  • Complex printing (specialized machine required)


Conclusion
